A Trip Into Wine Country - Andrew Murray Vineyards
A Trip Into Wine Country - Andrew Murray Vineyards Wines that are said to be in the style of Rhone wines are wines that have the character and varietal grape as grown in the Rhone River valley which runs south of Lyon, France through Marseille into the Mediterranean Sea. On the slops hillsides and banks of the Rhone, you will see the primary varietal grape Syrah baking in the sun. The region is divided into two distinct and different soil types. In the Northern area of the Rhone, the soil is sandy, granite-laced, steep hillsides and the vineyards are terraced. In the Southern area of the Rhone, the soil is a mixture of limestone, clay, sand, and potato sized stones called "galets". The landscape is more gently sloping down to the River Rhone. The Rhone style is a classic style imitated all over the world. An excellent example of the Rhone style in California is a winery just up the road from Santa Barbara off State Road 101 and County Road 154. Whether you drive up north from Santa Barbara or drive down south from San Luis Obispo when you get to County Road 154, turn east onto County Road 154 and go to Figueroa Mountain Road, turn north onto Figueroa Mountain Road and about 5 to 10 minutes you will see one of California's classic style Rhone winemakers vineyards, Andrew Murray Vineyards. Andrew Murray Vineyards makes 5 distinct "Rhone" style wines that showcase the variety style and the appellation style of the Rhone. Andrew Murray, a son of a family that has restaurants in Southern California catering to the Mexican appetite, displays his passion for the Rhone wine style. If one has ever experienced the wines of Hermitage's and Cote Rotie's of France, one can easily see why the passion and dedication Andrew has for the "Rhone" style. Focused on the Rhone varieties: Syrah, Grenache, Roussane, Marsanne and Viognier, Andred and the winery are making news and excitement in the world of Rhone style wines. Still testing and experimenting, Andrew Murray Vineyards is now producing an estate grown Chardonnay and a new proprietary red, "One Thousand Hill". Each attracting their own wine interest.
