Christmas in July

Christmas in July

A friend celebrates Christmas in July. Having no family to celebrate his birthday which is on December 25th our friend came up with the brilliant idea to have all his friends come and celebrate both his birthday and Christmas on July 25th. Having been an advertising man, our friend knew how important Christmas was for families. He knew that everyone would be busy preparing for the holidays, rushing here, rushing there. Everyone would be buying presents, going to parties and flying home to be with one's central family clan. For his birthday celebration, our friend would fly everyone to a special location, where each year there would be a big balsam fir tree all decorated with presents under the tree for everyone. Our friend would not accept any gifts or presents saying, "This is my birthday, please let me celebrate the the way I wish." So we all did. It was always a great time to see old friends and make friends with the new family additions. But for our friend it had to be a sad time. No family. Not ever married. All alone except for his friends who were all the family he would ever have. Our friend has since passed. We miss him very much. Not because of the Christmas in July and the gifts but because of his gift as a friend.

As we travel often we see the balsam fir trees growing in upper eastern United States and eastern Canada. We enjoy this part of the world for its nature and the calm energetic people that live in this beautiful landscape. Each time I see a balsam fir tree, I think of our friend who celebrated his birthday in July. Our friend was a very tall and thin person and the balsam fir tree reminds me of him.

One year we took the family on a summer vacation into this part of the world. We flew from South Florida to Boston where we rented a car and began a one month car adventure through New England, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. We drove all the way west to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada back into the United States down to Detroit, back into Canada to Toronto then on to Niagara Falls, NY, and back to Boston to fly home. We did this all in one month. It was a great adventure but there is one thing that lingers in my mind. It was all the dead trees especially the balsam fir trees. Whole areas wiped out. I asked someone about this, and they said it was due to acid rain from the industrial parts of Canada and the United States. I remember thinking what are we doing? Can mankind be so stupid. It's been quite a few years since we have been back to the eastern part of Canada; but from our friends in the area we have heard, it hasn't gotten any better. Maybe it is better we ship our industrial industry to places that don't care. But I wouldn't want to hurt another part of the world so that we can drive our big autos. Could we be so stupid. I hope not. I think of my tall balsam fir like friend and his passing, and it makes me think of the dead and dying trees that we saw on our adventure into the Northern United States and Canada. So the next time you go to get your Christmas tree to celebrate your life and your family, remember your Balsam Fir Friend. Peace and Happiness
