Cigars In a Nutshell - A Taste of Integrity Part 1 Cigar Color

Cigars In a Nutshell - A Taste of Integrity Part 1 Cigar Color

Some say that cigars are a hard agro-food to understand. If you will give me a few minutes, I hope to prove this wrong. Like any new information you must desire to learn and have patience. To understand cigars, it is important that you know their colors, shapes, and sizes. Also, you may want to know more about where they were grown, the cigar makers, and the suppliers. After this you probably will want more information on how to enjoy and care for your new palate pleaser's, cigars. This and more will be included here. So, pull up an ashtray and fire up your favorite cigar. Ladies and gentlemen you may smoke. (Warning Use of Tobacco may be Dangerous to Your Health - In other words it can kill you.)

Understanding Cigar Color

There are six major color grades of cigar wrappers (the outer tobacco leaf) in use today. They range from a light green to a dark black. Each has a different taste. Generally, the lighter the color, the milder the taste. The six colors are: Claro-Claro, Claro, Natural, Colorado, Maduro, and Oscuro.

Color

Claro-claro - This wrapper is a light green, often called Jade or Candela. It is best known as AMS, which stands for American Market Selection because this is the type of wrapper most smokers in the United States once liked. This wrapper is heat cured so that the chlorophyll is fixed in the leaf. Claro-claro is not as popular now that Americans are discovering new and different types of cigars. Claro-claro taste slightly sweet.

Claro - A light, yellow-brown to a light tan color. This wrapper is usually grown under shade tents. It is prized for its neutral flavor.

Colorado - Reddish brown to brown this wrapper is called EMS or English Market Selection. As taste have changed in the United States, this wrapper fine equall popularity with Americans as the English. The Colorado has a rich flavor and subtle aroma.

Natural - Light brown to brown in color and called cafe, it usually sun-grown. It is a step up in flavor and aroma, but not bold.

Maduro - Dark coffee brown with a reddish tint. Sometimes referred to as SMS for Spanish Market Selection. Maduro in Spanish means "ripe" and refers to the extra time that is taken to age the tobacco. This wrapper should have a rich strong flavor and a mild aroma. It should be silky and oily to the touch. This wrapper usually provides a sweet taste. The color, texture and taste of the Maduro wrapper is achieved by "cooking" the leaves in a pressure chamber or by allowing the bulks or "burros" of tobacco to ferment longer and to reach higher internal temperature, thus cooking the leaves by natural heat slowly.

Oscuro - Brownish black to blackish brown depending on your eye perception. It is the darkest of the wrappers. Oscuro means dark and sometimes is called negro or black in tobacco-producing countries. The leaves are left on the plant the longest, allowing the tobacco leaf to ripen and mature causing the tobacco leaf to turn dark. Can have a deep chocolaty flavor.
