Fortuitous Occurring By Happy Chance
Fortuitous Occurring By Happy Chance In 1986 we packed up the family and headed off to Europe. We had calculated the cost. We had determined the cities we wished to visit. We knew what we wanted to see. We were off on a great adventure. The movie, "National Lampoon Vacation," in Europe reminds us of some of our experiences. When we travel we tend to enjoy the complete idea of the travel. What I mean by this is that we leave a lot to happenstance. We may have a destination in mind but along the way we see something that captures our interest. We stop and enjoy the moment. Such a moment occurred on a early Sunday morning driving from Luxembourg to Germany. We had crossed over into Germany and the road was following the Moselle River. In this area, the river and road are parallel and very close. We could see the summer vacationers sitting out by their tents, children playing near the river, and even several boats on the river. These people were enjoying nature and, like an impressionist painting, they were part of the canvas. As we rounded a bend in the road, I saw a sign on the right that invited us to stop and visit a local winery. This looked like it would be a great opportunity to give everyone a break and stop, get out, and stretch our legs. Pulling off the road, we parked. We could see the Moselle River was not more than 200 yards from this three story winery. We all got out and were looking around when our daughter noticed the winery was closed. Oh well. Maybe next time we will be more fortunate. We walked around enjoying the fresh air and the natural cool breeze from the river. We were all about to load up and head out on the highway, when we heard a voice from the second floor of the winery calling down to us. What a picture this was. The older lady dressed in what then was the regional dress with embroidered apron and puffed sleeved over blouse was leaning out over the German window box calling to us through the double stain glass window. In a very soft voice she said in German, "If you will wait, the winemaster will come down and open the winery for you. What a thrill. About 10 minutes later a classic "Hummel" looking gentleman with leather britches, hat with a feather and rosy checks appeared. Opening the the two story winery, this gentleman invited us in. The aroma of wine permeated the air. Off to the right were large one-story wooden vine vats and stainless steel vats. As we were toured around the winery by our Mr. "Hummel," he spoke in German and told us about the winery. I translated for our family with what little German I could remember that I had learned while in the Army stationed at Mainz, Germany. Mr. "Hummel" gave us the grand tour. When he had shown us all the equipment, which he was very proud, he invited us to go downstairs. Thinking this would be ever more equipment, we were surprised to be in a tasting room with tables and chairs. Mr. "Hummel" started gathering glasses and bottles putting them on to the table he invited us to have a seat. Our son was 13 at the time and our daughter had just turned 16 while we were in Scotland on this trip. Feeling like grownups, our children with big smiles awaited the opportunity to sample the wine. Wine was not new to our children because the were use to having wine at home during the holidays. Mr"Hummel" started with a table wine then serving 15 more different wines produced at the winery. This was truly a fortuitous occurring by happy chance moment in my life, my family's life and especially for daughter and son. We still discuss Mr. "Hummel" and the fortuitous moment he provided our family.
