Getting on board and settling in your Cruise Do's and Don'ts
June 12, 2008 Although we had cruised frequently in the past, this was our first cruise since 2003. We were excited to be cruising again. In an effort to follow the dress code for dinner, we definitely packed too much clothing. Remember you will mostly likely be shopping on your trip. Allow yourself enough room in your luggage to bring back what you have purchased. There are many duty free shops that are very tempting. We highly recommend you lock your luggage. Luggage is delivered to your cabin, but stays in the hallway until you bring it into your cabin. The process of checking in on board the ship can be fast and painless by filling out the paper work on their internet site and printing out your Sea Pass. Royal Caribbean has a Crown and Anchor membership program you can join, and it is recognizes Celebrity Cruise line Captains Club. Your level of membership depends on the number of cruises taken. Crown and Anchor membership is for individuals who cruise frequently with Royal Caribbean. It enables you to check in faster and includes many more benefits. Based on your level, you get various discounts and gifts while on the cruise. We would highly recommend you join if you plan to cruise often; as we do and we have found it to be very beneficial. When you check in, you are given a plastic Sea Pass card that is your stateroom key as well as your method of purchasing and identification while on board the ship. This card is also part of the very excellent security process for getting on and off the ship when you go on an excursion in port. They take your picture the first time you use the card to disembark. Before you can leave port, all guests and crew members participate in a safety drill. Life jackets are in your stateroom and you must put them on and go to your Assembly Station. The location of your Assembly Station and route to get there is posted on the door to your stateroom. In addition, the crew is there to help you along your route. As soon as the safety drill is completed, the ship leaves port. Now begin your adventure. We found the Mariner of the Seas to be environmentally responsible. There are constant reminders on the ship to conserve electric, water, etc. Above all, do not throw items into the ocean that includes cigarette butts, it takes about five years to break down and fish do not like it either. The people you meet on board are, for us, the best part of the cruise. There were people from Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Serbia, Peru, India, Jamaica--not to mention from all over the USA. Once we found our stateroom and deposited our belongings, we decided to explore the ship. It is amazing to see all the facilities on board. This ship has a promenade. The promenade included shops, restaurants, lounges, and live entertainment. It was like being on a street in Europe. It reminded us of a ship we had taken from Stockholm to Helsinki. The Captain later confirmed that it was the same ship designer that had planned both promenades. It is important to read the Cruise Compass newsletter delivered to your stateroom each day. The daily planner lists events, dining times, and locations. You can decide what you would like to do in the comfort of your cabin. We like days at sea because you have time to relax and explore the ship. Many multi-generational families were on this cruise. The planned activities catered to the young children, teenagers, as well as adults. No one should get bored. In fact there are always so many interesting activities, you will need to take another vacation when you return. Disclaimer: We are not part of the cruise line or any association affliated with them. This is just to help you maximize your cruising experience. |
