Guangzhou China

Guangzhou China

We had finished our Li River cruise. According to our guide it is said "He who travels in Guilin (The beginning of the cruise.) hills finds himself in a fairyland," and "He who sails along the Li River finds himself boating in a sweet dream." The whole tour group thoroughly enjoyed this river cruise, and we would highly recommend it to you. The other attraction you don't want to miss in Guilin is the Reed Flute Cave (Lu Di Yan).

Because of the many reeds that grow outside this cave, it was named Reed Flute Cave. These reeds were used to make flutes. It is a water-eroded cave which contains stalacites, rock formations, and stone pillars that were formed by carbonate deposits. It is known as a "Palace of Natural Art." You can not help but be in awe of this natural art. They use various color lighting to highlight the rock formations. The tour takes about an hour. You enter the cave and your sightseeing takes you in route that is shaped like a "U." You end up existing from a different cave near your original entrance.

Different areas of the cave have names such as Crystal Palace, Dragon Pagoda, Virgin Forest, and flower. We felt one area looked like the sky line of New York City. You have to be careful when walking in the cave because it is very slippery. We recommend comfortable shoes and a light jacket, remember you are underground. Between the guides fairy tale stories and the creative lighting, the guide wants you to feel that you are in paradise. They create a wonderful and mysterious ambience at this busy tour site.

Our next stop on our 15-day escorted tour to China was Guangzhou also called the South Gate of China. Other names for Guangzhou are Sui (Ears of Rice) and the City of Ram (Yang Cheng). The Pearl River runs through this city. Since December 6, 1981, Guangzhou has been the sister city of Los Angeles, and is proud to say it is only 7,436 miles from Los Angeles. People in Southern California have deep ties to this province. The people of Guangzhou are internationally known as successful and hard-working. They have migrated all over the world. Although they have gone to other parts of the globe, they keep close ties with their heritage city. Guangdong province was formally known as Cantan. Guangzhous is the capital of this province; It is considered the center of South China's important trade zone that includes Hong Kong and has been a leader in international trade for more than 300 years. The city, although growing and devloping with the times, tries to retain its 2000 year old customs.

It is worth doing some shopping in this wonderful city. Above all you should definitely experience the Cantonese Cuisine (Yue Cai) which may include delicious, unusual ingredients.

It is from this city that our tour group embarked from mainland China to go to Hong Kong by boat. Our guides were not allowed to leave mainland China to accompany us to Hong Kong. We would miss their company. They had taken very good care of all our needs. The group was happy to tip them generously. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, we would be met by other representatives of Bestours, Inc. (http://www.bestour.com).

This is the eighth of several articles relating our experiences and impressions of a 15-day escorted tour of China we took in September of 2002.
