Is It Legal?
Is It Legal? This is a question that I am sure has crossed everyone's mind at one time or another. You start off in life dreaming about what you want to become because everyone asks you when your six years old, "What do you what to be." Children do not know what the question means, but they do get that is important to the grownups. The question will influence the child for the rest of their lives. I sure it is still influencing your life right now. At six years old I decided I wanted to be the Mayor of our town. I did not want to be a banker because everyone said the Banker that lived in the fancy house four blocks over was a mean, cruel scoundrel. No child in their right mind would want to be a scoundrel therefore not a banker. I never got to be the Mayor of the town where I was born. We moved away from this one stop light town. I only went back once and it was raining so hard that you could not see out the windshield of the car. Growing up I saw how everyone wanted to be important. Their jobs made them important. The family, especially their children made them important. Their illnesses make them important. Look at my trophies. Meet my son/daughter the doctor. Yes, I am an English Teacher. I'm a famous book writer. And on an on it goes, everyone one gamesmanship after another. Gotta be important. When your dead are you important. Maybe for a few years in history. Do the trees care if you are important. Will the Earth 10 million years from now care if you are important. Being important is how we justify. Justifying is lying. "There is no justice in law," an Attorney told me recently at an Art Gallery opening. Standing with her glass of red wine she was telling me about her last 25 years as a state's attorney. She hated her job. Now retired she was looking to get in to doing watercolors. I introducer her to one of the finest bird watercolorist and moved on. This reminded me why I did not become an attorney. At sixteen I had decided that I wanted to be an International Law attorney. That meant I would have to move to Zürich to study. After college graduation I started attending law school to pursue my dream. Still working as a waiter I met someone that could introduce me to a full partner at the best successful law firm in the state. What an opportunity. The three full partners took me to lunch in the membership only club at the top of the tallest building in the city. Boy, was I impressed. I was told that when I graduated law school they would make me a junior partner. In the mean time I would work with them as a legal investigator. They gave me a key to the firm's offices. Told me I could use the law library any time I wanted. This was exciting. Everything was working out just fine, until. Yes, there always is an until. First, the new car that had been purchased to assure no vehicle problems lost all of it's oil. A repairman doing an oil change at the dealership where the car was purchased failed to do the job properly. Driving from the law school to the restaurant, the car began to have smoke coming out the back of the car. I stopped to see what the problem could be. Without oil the engine froze. I had to threaten the dealership with a law suite before they replaced the engine. Next, came the illness. I got German measles from someone while working at the restaurant. This knocked me out of the job at the restaurant. Finally, one morning I woke with blood in my right eye. Eye strain, I was told from all the late night law book and case study reading was the cause. The universe had finally convinced me that law was not for me. Is it legal? No, the legal profession was not for me. Out of the law class students I started with only 10 students were still in the legal business after 15 years. Six of these classmates are now dead. No, legal is not for me.
