Kouign Aman
Kouign Aman If you are not familiar with the word "Kouign Aman" then you have missed a little part of heaven. "Warning", Anyone trying to diet please read no further. If you do, you do so at your own risk. You have been warned. What is Kouign Aman? Some say it is a cake and some say a pastry. Kouign Aman is a Breton word and Breton refers to an area in Brittany, France. In Breton the word "Kouign Aman" means "cake butter". Breton words for cake ("kouign") and butter ("amann"). In the folk history, Kouign Aman is attributed to a Yves Rene-Scordia, who around 1860 moved to Douarnenez in Finistère, France and opened a bakery shop. One of his recipes that Yves made in his bakery shop was Kouign Aman. The locals were so enthusiastic about Yves Rene-Scordia's Kouign Aman that they got together and created an association called “true Kouign Aman de Douarnenez.” So the folklore and dedication grew into an obsession. Again we ask, "What is Kouign Aman?" Kouign Aman is flour, butter, sugar, water, salt and yeast. That's it. So what makes it such an obsessed food product that anyone you ask can not say enough great kudos about it? For me it is the richness, the caramelizing, the tempting that makes Kouign Aman special. It is exceptionally good, but is should not be an everyday treat. This one is special in anyone's book. I've listed the recipe ingredients but you need to go to the website to learn the different methods of making this delicious pastry. The ingredients are: 1 sachet dried yeast 3/4- 1 cup warm water 2 1/2 cups of flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 6 ounces butter, softened 3/4 cup sugar Probably the best website to check is http://nosheteria.com/dailyspecial/2006/12/kouign-aman.html to learn how to make your own "cake butter" Kouign Aman. Or you can also try http://culturebreizh.free.fr/bretagne.php?lang=eng&pageid=660. Good Luck, just don't get too good at making it an everyday treat. The pounds add up fast. Unless you are headed to Paris or to Douarnenez, France you may find it hard to find the true Kouign Aman in the United States or else ware. I have had a good rendition of Kouign Aman in Quebec, Canada. In the United States, the only place I have had Kouign Aman; and this was several years ago, was at Fauchon's in New York City. But I understand they are moving or may have moved to a new location. Don't get back to the "Big Apple" as much as I would like too these days. Hope you get a chance to enjoy this little piece of heaven. You will remember the first time you enjoyed it, by your self, with friends or in that special bakery that has become your favorite home away from home. Smile, be Happy.
