Myths and Man - Symbols - Bells zhong

Myths and Man - Symbols - Bells zhong

In the western culture bells are use to call to church, sound an alarm, as a musical instrument and to called attention as chimes or sleigh bells. The two most recognized bells in western culture are the "Liberty" bell and "Big Ben" bell.

The Chinese have been making bells as far back as the Bronze period of China. The zhong was originally used as a musical instrument. Later the bell was used on the Great Wall of China to sound alarms. When Buddhism came to China via India the bell became associated with Buddhist temples and many of the great bell can still be found today.

As a symbol in China the bell zhong means 'to hit the mark' and is a symbol understood as good wishes.

There are many legends through out China's history involving bells. There is a great story about the daughter of a bell maker jumping into the casting of a bell for the Emperor. Her father had cast the bell twice before but the bell cracked. Failure the third time would cost her father is life. Not wanting to lose her father an a daughter's filial piety, she cast herself into the fiery casting. Her father was only able to grab her slipper from her foot. Thus the saying, "Holding the slipper" has come to mean a daughter's filial responsibility to the parents. Because of the daughter's sacrifice when the bell was retrieved from the casting, cleaned and sounded, the bell has the clearest tone ever produced. This bell is said to still be available in China to be heard. Other stories say that bells can fly to where they wish.

This is a series of informations on Myths and Man - Symbols it is a collection of myths and symbols I have been collecting and researching since 1968 when I first did a paper on 'Myth and Modern Day Man.' In 1968 I had an opportunity to speak with Arthur C. Clarke, who had written the short story that lead to the screenplay '2001: A Space Odyssey.' We discussed the myths of man and how myths would change man after 2001. I believe Myths and Metaphors are what moves civilization forward. jGibney (Never Published)
