Myths and Man - Symbols - Centipede wu-gong

Myths and Man - Symbols - Centipede wu-gong

I don't think most house bound computer home business people will know what a centipedes is. The centipede is named for its supposedly 100 feet. The centipede is arthropods (an invertebrate having jointed limbs and a segmented body with an exoskeleton made of chitin). Some centipedes can have a poisonous bite which for an adult can be painful, a child and an individual that have allergies like to bee stings the centipede bite can be very serious.
In the western society the centipede if there are any myths or symbology on them I have not discovered any at present. Mostly people in the western societies have a fear of anything long, close to the ground, comes out of the dirt, and wiggles.

The centipede 'wu-gong' in China is considered the arch-enemy of the snake. There are many Chinese folktales telling how heroes and heroines are saved by the ability of the centipede to detect the presents of a snake. Still to this day mountain people place a centipede in a bamboo cane to detect snakes. The centipede is one of the five noxious creatures the Chinese feel are poisonous. The myth about the centipede is that the centipede must be driven out of the community on the 5th day of the 5th month to protect the community from centipede bites.
Because the cock love's wiggle things to eat, it might eat the centipede the cock is an important animal to keep near one's home to eat and kill the centipede. For there is a fear that the centipede might crawl into bed with you and night and bite you.

This is a series of informations on Myths and Man - Symbols it is a collection of myths and symbols I have been collecting and researching since 1968 when I first did a paper on 'Myth and Modern Day Man.' In 1968 I had an opportunity to speak with Arthur C. Clarke, who had written the short story that lead to the screenplay '2001: A Space Odyssey.' We discussed the myths of man and how myths would change man after 2001. I believe Myths and Metaphors are what moves civilization forward. jGibney (Never Published)
