Myths and Man - Symbols - Clouds 'yun'
Myths and Man - Symbols - Clouds 'yun' Most of our western mythology about clouds tends to come from the Greeks. In Greek mythology, the 'Gods' live in the clouds and look down on us. The clouds are mostly to hide the 'gods' comings and goings. Even in the Judo-Christian world, clouds are where 'God' is and 'Christ' ascends into. Clouds are just a curtain, a backdrop; in front of or behind, upon which the 'Gods' perform. In the Americas, clouds mythology tends to be similar to the Europeans concept, with the exception, more scientific. It is more the science of clouds than the mythology. The color of clouds is important to the meteorologist. Bluish-gray is the result of light scatter in the cloud. Greenish-tinged clouds is a sign of heavy rain, possibly hail, strong winds leading to the possibility of tornadoes. Yellowish cloud is due to forest fires. The sunrise/sunset reds, oranges and pink clouds are due to the scattering of the sunlight. It is only when the artistic or creative endeavors of artists get involved that clouds may have some mythological importance. In China clouds 'yun' symbolizes happiness. Clouds bring rain and good fortune, thus happiness. Five colors (wu-se-yun) clouds are symbols of the five-folds of happinesses: luck, prosperity, longevity, happiness, and wealth. Clouds with mountains represent a separation and longing. 'Clouds and rain' (yun yu), the most frequent image, symbolize sexual union. The clouds refers to the blending of the man and woman. The rain refers to the climax of the union. If you receive a card with five bats and clouds, this is to present you with good fortune. Usually there is a gift of money with the card. This is a series of information on Myths and Man - Symbols it is a collection of myths and symbols I have been collecting and researching since 1968 when I first did a paper on 'Myth and Modern Day Man.' In 1968 I had an opportunity to speak with Arthur C. Clarke, who had written the short story that lead to the screenplay '2001: A Space Odyssey.' We discussed the myths of man and how myths would change man after 2001. I believe Myths and Metaphors are what moves civilization forward. jGibney (Never Published) Nature is Beautiful; Art captures the Soul.
