Speed Reading by jGibney

Speed Reading

When I was in college I use to read all my books, articles and classroom materials word for word. I was afraid I was going to miss something. When I got to my junior class level I had an opportunity to take a speed reading class. What a change it made.

First I learned that reading word for word does not increase you comprehension, actually it do the opposite. By the time you have finished a paragraph you have forgotten the concept that you where trying to understand.

Second I learned that it's not the words but the concept that is important. This may make you think the style or actual words are not important. This is not so. The choice of style and words chosen and used help determine the speed at which you may wish to read.

There are a lot of different theories out there about Speed Reading. I do not adhere to any one theory, but I do know speed reading has helped me in college, law school and in my every day reading. I can read a book like "Hawaii" in less than 3 days, but I enjoy reading leisure material over a much longer time period. When it comes to contracts and legal material I read a little faster. When comes to reviewing books and large position papers I can go a little faster. When comes to the internet, I can go very fast and still tell you what I read and if the information is important to me. I've gotten good enough that I can read 3 different articles laid out side by side at the same time.

This ability has lead me to develop a writing concept called 3-dimensional writing. It is where you get three points of view at the same time. Presently, I am writing a book in this style called "Heaven's Mandate." It is about the period of the First Emperor of China, the warring and the results of the "mandate of heaven." The "Mandate of Heaven" is a very important concept to the Han people's concept of government. If the people suffer at the hands of government then "heaven" will send comets, floods, and earthquakes to warn the government has found disfavor of "Heaven" and must correct its ways. Failure to do so then "Heaven" removes the mandate and bestows it on one that is worthy.

I've included an example of 3-dimensional reading material to demonstrate this technique. Try reading one column at a time, then two, and then three. Try reading acroos all three columns at once. You should fine this a challenging exercise. Our grandchildren do this everyday and think nothing of it.

Speed reading has worked for me and it has lead me to develope a style of writing that I enjoy.
