The Aroma of Pearls

The Aroma of Pearls

Who would have guessed that a plant like the "Needle Bush" would smell so good. Well it's not the bush or thorns that lends itself to the world of smell called "parfum" or "perfume" it's the flowers. If you are in the southwestern part of the United States near Santa Fe, New Mexico, you will see this "needle bush" more like a scrubby 6 foot to 12 foot tree in dry gullies or old dry river beds. If you are out hiking, bicycling, or dune bugging be careful, the needle bush will reach out and stab you with many 2 to 4 inch thorns. Boy, does it hurt. They tend to leave long scratch marks. The gnats just love the blood ooze from the scratches. This is a plant one needs to be careful around.

In the world of perfumes, which uses many diverse plant parts, the needle bush yellow flowers are what is used. The process of distillation (chemical substances separated by volatilities by boiling) of the flowers to produce a perfume called Cassie. The Cassie perfume from the needle bush flowers provide a spicy cinnamon aroma with undertones of complex balsamic that is rich, sweet, and persistent.

Two of the best perfumes that use the Cassie needle bush in the art of making perfumes are Chanel No 22 and Frédéric Malle Une Fleur de Cassie. Chanel No 22 is produced by the Chanel company started by Coco Chanel. It is one of the best perfumers known in the business of perfumes. It is said, that if pearls had a scent the scent would be like Chanel No 22, a smooth elegant aloofness and warmth. The odd wet paper note of Une Fleur de Cassie surprises you with a twist of warm violets and roses ending with a mimosa leatheriness after note. Both fragrances are excellent examples of the cassie perfume produced from the needle bush.

The distilled Cassie oils of the needle bush have been used in an alternative medical discipline know as aromatherapy. Not widely accepted as a form of medical treatment aromatheraph uses the volatile oils to affect a person's mood which can affect one's over all health. If nothing else, the patient smells good. How one feels about themselves does affect ones health if only calming the mind.

Perfume types that one might find in local stores are:
"Perfume types reflect the concentration of aromatic compounds in a solvent, which in fine fragrance is typically ethanol or a mix of water and ethanol. Various sources differ considerably in the definitions of perfume types. The concentration by percent/volume of perfume oil is as follows:

* Perfume extract (Extrait): 15-30% (IFRA: typical 20%) aromatic compounds
* Eau de Parfum (EdP): 10-15% (typical ~15%) aromatic compounds. Sometimes listed as "eau de perfume".
* Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-20% (typical ~10%) aromatic compounds
* Eau de Cologne (EdC): 2-5% aromatic compounds
* Splash and aftershaves: 0.5-2% aromatic compounds"
