The Day I Found My Voice

The Day I Found My Voice

The day my mother tried to slap my face because as I was cooking and preparing my lunch, she told me "You're doing it wrong." My reply, "I know what I'm doing." This is when she tried to slap my face. Before she could hit my face I blocked the slap with my right arm. This surprised her and it surprised me. "Look boy," she growled. "You're going to have to a lot of corn bread and beans before you can kick my ass." That is when at the age of seventeen I knew it was time to move on.

I slowly eat the lunch I had prepared. My mother was still steaming from my ability to block her slap. I washed up my plate changed my cloths and walked to downtown Cocoa, Florida. This is about a six mile walk. Walking around not knowing what I was going to do, I happened to pass by the Air Force Recruiting office. Stepping in, I met a young F-6 Sargent. I knew the rank because I had been in the Civil Air Patrol where I had met officers and enlisted men. I had never met a woman in the services at that time. If there were any. I ask how and what I need to do to join the Air Force. I was told that I had to pass a battery of test and if I qualified I would be accepted into the Air Force. I asked "How long will this take." His reply, "If you pass the exam it will still be about three to four months before you ship out to basic." Not liking the answer, I thanked the Sargent and left. Next door wast the Army Recruiting office. I pushed open the door and E-5 Sargent greet me with a big "Hello," and a big smile. "How can I help you," he asked. "What do I have to do to join the Army?" my question. "Pass the exam and your in." he quickly replied. "How long will it take," I queered. "Pass the test and you'll be on the bus on your way to Jacksonville today," he replied.

I took the test, passed and was told to be back at 1400 (2:00 PM for civilians). I walked home. My mother had gone out. I collected a few things, told my younger sister and brother to be good, and left.

At 1430 all the new recruits and I loaded on to an old gray greyhound bus and headed to Jacksonville, Florida. At 1631 I was sworn into the Army. Once all the paper work and evening chow was had, again we the new inductees loaded on to a different grey bus bound for Fort Jackson, South Caroline. We arrived in Ft Jackson at 0110, unloaded before a long building that receded into the darkness. Someone in the darkness told us get our things and to go inside this dark building, find a bunk and get some sleep. On the bus I had met a young person about my age, we had talked on the ride up, so we found bunks across from one another. It must have been 0230 and everyone was still excited and were discussing the day. I had dozed of several time, but the chatter keep waking me. Having had enough, I shouted, "Shut up. Go to sleep." Everyone instantly shut up. All was quiet. The excitement and the journey finally over came me and I slept until a loud whistle and a booming voice yelled, "Get your girly asses up and fall out for reveille. Outside each person's name was call, just to see if anyone had gotten lost during the night. The E-5 Sargent order is to form a line. This Sargent shouted, "All I want to see is assholes and elbows, police the area. If it don't move pick it up." As we moved alone in a half crouch my new friend said, "Boy, we got a mean Sargent." "What do you mean," I asked. "Like last night when he yelled at us to shut up and go to sleep." I smiled and replied, "That was not the Sargent, that was me." That is when I knew I had found my voice.
