Touring the Wine Country Cambria Winery and Vineyard
Touring the Wine Country Cambria Winery and Vineyard After visiting Byron Vineyard and Winery, it's time to move on to Cambria Winery and Vineyard. Cambria is basically across the road from Byron Vineyard and Winery. As you leave Byron, make a left onto County 176 and almost immediately you will see Santa Maria Mesa Road. Turn right onto Santa Maria Mesa Road which will curve back to your right. The first road on your right is Chardonnay Lane. Turn right on to Chardonnay Lane and this will bring you to Cambria Winery and Vineyards with its 1,405 acres with vineyards orientated east to west. Cambria is an estate property where all their wines made are from grapes grown, harvested and bottled at the winery. All grapes are hand-harvested to insure quality of the pick and quality of the grapes with care and respect for each varietal grown in the vineyards. In 1986 Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson purchased the Tepusquet Vineyard and renamed it Cambria which means "Wales." Canbria was chosen as the name for the winery and vineyard to celebrate and honor the proprietors' family heritage. Today, Cambria has a reputation for lush, tropical Katherine's Chardonnays, velvety Julia's Pinot Noirs and spicy Tepusquet Syrahs varietals. These varietals reach great depth in this cool-climate, high elevation property. Cambria's proximity to the ocean and east-west orientation gives this 1,405-acre property the diversity it needs to grow Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah under perfectly suited conditions. Located in the heart of the Santa Maria Valley appellation of Santa Barbara County, California, Cambria's soil is shallow, porous and well-drained. The soil and the maritime influences of the Pacific Ocean just 15 miles west of the vineyards forces the vines to focus on fruit development while cloaked in annually mild temperatures which extends the growing season at Cambria. This extra time to mature allows the vines to ripen and balance the fruit acids in the different varietals developing big full fruit and body in the wines produced from the vines. As an estate property, Cambria's Vineyard Manager and Winemaker work in tandem to perfect the wine growing process. Together, they select only the finest grapes from the estate to bear the Cambria name. Every grape is hand-harvested and crafted into wine with the utmost care and respect for the varietal. All this success is attributed to the team effort at Cambria from the proprietors, the wine master, to the individuals hand picking the grapes. Vineyard management techniques employed by Denise Shurtleff, Cambria's wine maker include leaf thinning, low irrigation, and removal of underdeveloped grapes. These techniques lead to what Denise says, "Winemaking begins on the vine." These techniques added to Denise's winemaking skills of barrel fermented and sur lies aged wines the Cambria wines reach their full potential of palate feel and fruit bouquet. Tasting Notes I've misplace my tasting notes that included Cambria but as I recall the Chardonnay I tried was tropical with full varietal fruit and bouquet. A little hard on the oak for my palate. The tasting note should be some time in 1996, but I do not remember the year of the wine, just the label.
