Western Caribbean Cruise Excursion Labadee,Haiti

June 13, 2008

You can order your exploration tickets on your stateroom television. The service is fast and you will know immediately if you are confirmed for the excursion. We had chosen our excursions on the Royal Caribbean website before sailing. Another method for reserving your excursion, would be to visit the exploration desk on the ship. Generally, you would have to stand in line. It's important to thoroughly research the description of each excursion before choosing so as not to be disappointed. Usually, you will have several to choose from; they vary in level of difficulty, duration, and cost. Some excursions may require you to sign a waiver or release form. Having decided on your excursions, it time to disembark at our first port-of-call.

Labadee, Haiti was our first port-of-call on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 (8:00 am - 3:30 pm). It's a private beach area owned by Royal Caribbean. There are walking trails, beautiful beaches, and amazing views of the western Caribbean. We are always interested in the history of the country we visit. Labadee historic walking tour was our choice. It's level of difficulty was moderate and lasted about an hour.

When taking the tour, remember it is a tropical climate. You should carry water and put on a good sun block. You should be able to walk about and hour and climb steps. We saw the historic ruins of Nellie's Tower; learned about the medicinal properties of the tropical plants; and heard the breathing dragon on Dragon's Rock. He explained to our tour group the difference between a pirate and a buccaneer. The pirate robs and plunders from the seas, and the buccaneer robs and plunders from a base on land.

Our guide was wonderful. You could tell he is proud of Haiti's history and heritage. Haiti fought the French for their freedom and cost Napoleon a great deal of money. As result, the US was able to buy the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon. The country is very poor; there are no jobs for the Haitians. Haitians have none of the items we take for granted in the rest of the world. He was happy with his job because he can help his family and country. Haitian children have to overcome the barrier of high tuition for schools. They walk many miles to attend schools because there are so few to attend. Our guide was teaching children to speak English so they would have more opportunities. In order to buy food and other necessities, they walk to Dominican Republic. No one appears to own a car, and there are few roads.

Labadee also has areas for shopping. We encountered a wonderful artist while returning to the ship and talked to him for a while. His work was very good and representative of the people in Haiti.

Please do not forget to tip your tour guide, it can really help the economy of the country you are visiting.

The cost of this excursion was $30 for the two of us. The total cost of the 7-day Western Caribbean cruise for two was $3,072. This does not include airfare. We live 5 minutes away from Port Canaveral.
