Western Caribbean Last Cruise Day

June 18, 2008

The Mariner of the Seas had visited Labadee, Haiti; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Georgetown, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico within the last six days. It was time to head back to Port Canaveral, Florida. All the ports-of call were great, exciting and offered many land excursion tours from which to choose. However, our fun was not yet over.

A cruise day on board the Mariner offers many activities. You could lay out by the pool and work on your tan or play poolside games. You could read a book in the ship's library. In addition, there is a family talent show and family ice skating in which you could participate. The ship has what is called an explorer academy where you could learn to play steel drums and the keyboard. The last day is when you might like to purchase t-shirts, windbreakers, etc. at 50 % off. You could climb the rock wall, visit the gym, play golf with a simulator, or go to the spa for a treatment. In the evening each day of the cruise, the stateroom attendant would turn down the bed and place a chocolate on your pillow; but, the big surprise was the stateroom attendant would fold towels into many different animals such as a monkey, elephant, swan, dog and stingray. The explorer academy offered a demonstration to show us how they did it.

If you enjoy bingo, there are many daily opportunities to play; the casino on board will allow you to play other games as well. Nightly entertainment includes variety shows, ice skating shows, and jazz shows to name a few. Park West sponsors art workshops and live Art Auctions. Music and dancing with live bands and DJ's start at 11:45 am and last until 11:15 pm in various areas throughout the ship. If you are a wine buff, they offer wine tastings. The activities are endless.

We had made an appointment for a future cruise consultation with the loyalty ambassador for 9:00 am on Saturday, June 7, 2008, the last day of our Western Caribbean cruise. While meeting with her, we applied for a Royal Caribbean credit card so we would earn points for future cruises when using the card. By booking a future cruise on board, you will get discounts or credits toward your next cruise. It is beneficial to join the Crown & Anchor Society, we believe, because of the opportunities we have had as a result of our membership. We were able to board the ship faster avoiding long lines, and there was a special departure lounge we waited in before disembarking. We were among the first groups to leave the ship.

Cruising is an international adventure. Both the passengers and crew you meet are from all over the world. This is our favorite part of the cruise--people! Most people are friendly, and we enjoy getting to know them. The servers are hard workers and have families at home they are helping. We have a great deal of respect for them; and as a result, we make sure to follow the tip recommendations made by the cruise companies. If some one is outstanding in their service or in making us feel comfortable, we give an additional tip. The tips are given on the last night of the cruise. We made arrangements for the gratuities to be put on our SeaPass account. They gave us vouchers to give to the service staff.

The night before you disembark it is important to fill out your guest satisfaction survey and place in the guest relations box. They only count those survey put in the locked box. This is your opportunity to praise the cruise line or to complain. They value your opinion and encourage you to fill the surveys out.

When preparing for departure, a newsletter is provided to help you. The night before, you are encouraged to remove old tags from your luggage and attach the new ones provided. (Earlier in the week, you had to fill out a form telling them your onshore connections after leaving the ship.) They assigned a color tag and departure time based on your plans. Luggage is to be put out in the hallway the night before departure. (We recommend locking your luggage as it is unattended until picked up.) When on the ship, you were able to use a plastic card called a SeaPass for all your purchases. A final statement of your account is delivered to your stateroom, and you can also view this account regularly on the TV during cruising. Accounts will be billed to your credit card.

The final item to complete is the mandatory customs and border protection forms. Every person has to go through an immigration inspection. You can get help with departure by viewing the video on TV prepared for the guests. You must wait in your assigned areas until your color tag is called. Luggage is not available until then. We were able to wait in a special departure lounge for Crown & Anchor members. It was very comfortable, and it had a selection of pastries and beverages.

Now it's time to disembark. You will need to present your SeaPass card to leave the ship. It is an important security protection. They will compare you to the picture in their files. Our shuttle was waiting to take us home.

We are looking forward to our next cruise.
