When Your Job Moves To China, What Do You Do?
When Your Job Moves To China, What Do You Do? Now, I've never had this experience; nor opportunity. I've alway done what I wanted. Never considered doing anything, but what I wanted. My first job was as a soda fountain engineer (Ok, soda jerk). At the age of 14 (would not be 14 until 5 months later) with my parents hardy approval I took over a job from a school friend at Five Points Pharmacy in Cocoa, Florida. My friend was moving up in the world; got himself a job at Winn Dixie; paying $1.60 an hour. I was getting $1.45 to start I would scrub the wooden slats we stood on behind the counter each Wednesday (very tough, when your only 4'10" at the time and weighing only 45 lbs more than a wooden slat). Each day at the close of the day, I would take out the trash; left up the wooden slats; sweep behind the counter and mop the floor. I was supposed to work only 3 afternoons for maximum of 10 hours each week during school days. Saturday and Sunday I was allowed to work a full shift. Needless to say, that never happened. I would come home from school; change cloths (had to wear black pants and white shirt); go immediately to the Drug Store, as it was called; sign in and start to work. I would make sodas, sundaes, banana splits and dip ice cream (the fun part of the job). My primary duties were to wash dishes, clean the customer counter, clean the floors and all surfaces behind the counter. Oh, and at all times make sure the cook's area was clean; utensils were cleaned and stored properly. After a year of this grand experience and opportunity, and that I was getting old enough, I left to work with Winn Dixie. Alway, looking for a better opportunity. What does this have to do with your job going to China. Things change. You must change. Seek out new opportunities. Did I always want to only work at Five Points Pharmacy? No. It is the NO, that made it possible for me to try and do many new and adventurous jobs. Never saw any position I had as a put down. Only saw each new position as an opportunity for new experiences and new friends. Once, I remember, my Father saying, " The reason we are moving from Live Oak is so that you children will have better opportunities." Sometimes you must move to better opportunities; but I believe most of the time you have to see the opportunities at hand. A woman lost her husband in a train accident at his work. She and her son had no money or opportunity for a job. She did what she had to do. She took the last bit of flour she had added some lard and salt. Formed the dough into biscuits. Took them down to the train station; sold them for a profit. Bought more product; made more biscuits and sold them. You know the company that had its origin from this widower's hard work and seizing the opportunity before her, as Nabisco. The National Biscuit Company. If, you job goes to China, start you own opportunity. You are responsible for your family and yourself. Do what you have to do, deal with what is in front of you. No one will tell you it will be easy. I know, I retired at 55; and I still seek out new opportunities everyday. It's about living.
